Famous Texan muscians and trivia

Texas has long been a center for musical innovations. We Texans have long pioneered new venues of music and take pride in our musical accomplishments. Some of the early best known popular Texas artists, were, Buddy Holly, Buck Owens, Roy Orbison, Billy Preston ,Tex Ritter and Jerry Scoggins to name a few. Let us fast foward just a little bit to the present, and who among us have not heard of Willie Nelson, George Strait, Ray Price, Clay Walker , Freddy Fender, Aaron Watson or Pat Green? Some of these great Texas singers were and are also great lyricists. For example Willie Nelson wrote these great songs, ‘ Hello Walls’, (for Faron Young) …’ Pretty Paper’, (for Roy Orbison) and of course ‘Crazy’, (for Patsy Cline). Thesr are songs that are legends in themselves. But, can you imagine that they were all written by the man himself, Willie Nelson? And now we can appreciate him not only as a great singer, but also as a great songwriter. We should not fail to mention, that George Strait wrote a beautiful song, ‘I can’t see Texas From here”, from his album, “Strait From The Heart” Such a sweet and heart rendering song. . So that is to say that many of these Texas muscians were also lyricists as well as composers.

My musical adventure

I told family and friends, that I wanted to join that elite group of people and write a new CD .Of course I would in no way be elite or part of that great group. I aIso, informed them, that my music had to be Texas in flavor. Yes it had to be a little of everything. A varied genre of tunes. For example, a little soul and pop with some country western music sprinkled in. Also I wanted to write two latino melodies. And speaking of Latino, did you know that Freddy Fender wrote and sang his best selling hit, ‘Before the Next Teardrop Falls’? Yes this great song was by this great artist. But moving on, my music would also include jazz and easy rock. I wanted the music to be rooted in a sort of Texas kind of music. I started my project around the 10th of January, 2010. The first melody was, ” I can’t wait to see you again” and ended with the tune ” Take one more chance for love”, That last tune was completed on the 21st. of February, 2010.

In conclusion

So creating beautiful music as a composer or writing meaningful lyrics as a singer/song writer is not something I have been accustom to, and concentrating strickly on a pop album is something entirely new. So as I set out to compose these constrasting groups of melodies. You would think I would have known what I was doing? But I did not. I had to learn and I had to improvise. Thus only then I was able to complete what I had started. You can now listen to each of the melodies and see the variety and contrast I tried to put into each new song. Each song has its own character and mood.. Some of the music is romantic, and some, soft jazz, or easy-listening. A couple of songs are down-right-straight-and-out country music. The reason I wrote so many types of music , is that a filmscore composer must have knowledge and skills about all kinds of music. And remember too, that just as I have tried to create beautiful music, as did Willie Nelson, George Strait and so many of the other singer/songwriters, I encourage you to go and accomplish your goals in life, whatever they might be. With your ambition, your computer, a lot of effort and a little ingenuity, almost anything is possible. Do your research get involved and see what happens.

I heard a concert by the NY Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel. The program was aired on a NPR broadcast. This concert had taken place in N. Korea. The Philharmonic is the first major American cultural group to perform in the country and the largest delegation from the United States to visit its longtime foe.

When the concert ended with a final encore of the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang” — beloved in both the North and South — the orchestra received a five-minute standing ovation, with many audience members cheering, whistling and waving to the beaming musicians. Other works included Dvorak’s “New World Symphony,” written while the Czech composer lived in the United States and inspired by native American themes; Wagner’s Prelude to Act 3 of “Lohengrin”; and Gershwin’s “An American in Paris.”

This folk song is a song the Korean mother would sing to her child. It was a beautiful and moving piece of music. The audiences in each country, both North and South Korea, where the music was also played, it was noticeable that there was not a dry eye in the house, due to the sheer beauty of the music. And it might be added, due to the significance and importance both countries share with their beloved folk song. And the music was indeed beautiful. I remember the beauty but unfortunately not the melody. Nor have I attempted to hear that particular melody again. I do not want to hear any Asian melodies just yet. I just want to focus on what lasting impressions, this lovely melody imparted.

Determined, I began to embark on and completed my musical journey. I began composing the music, May 16th of this year and, today, July the 3rd, not only is the work completed, I also registered it with the copyright office. So in a span of about 48 days I totally completed a major work. The piece is in three movements and is about 37 min. long.

Poor blood circulation

Poor blood circulation is a common and wide spread problem, affecting over eight to twelve million people. The medical term for this disease is Critical Limb Ischemia or CLI. If left unattended the disease can progress to the point where every step taken is an exercise in pain and torture. But one may ask, what causes one to end up in such a debilitating condition? The causes could be for multiple reasons. But the end results remain the same. The results are a buildup of plaque and other obstructive materials in the blood vessels and veins. The veins are weakened and the surrounding tissue becomes nutrient starved. Some of the problems can be attributed to our modern day lifestyle. A lifestyle filled with junk food from a poor nutritional intake. Also our diets are filled with high fat and low fiber. A sedentary lifestyle involving little or no activity makes for all kinds of health complications. And again, some things are just hereditary. My mother for example, was type I diabetic. Her mother and all her siblings were afflicted with diabetes at a very young age. She also died from Critical Limb Ischemia complications, due to her diabetes. She contracted gangrene in her right leg and by the time it was discovered it was too late. ( see my blog: Prostate cancer awareness ) Those whose conditions have advanced to this critical stage will not be able to improve the problem on its own, unfortunately. They must seek medical treatment.

Most Common Symptom

What are some of the suspect symptoms? Any continuing pain or cramping can be seen as a cause of the disease. Difficulty when walking also is a cause of poor blood circulation. I had calve and leg cramps about once a month. It gradually became an unbearable all night event. That is when I discovered I had diabetes among other things. Checkups are a necessity. Also I became interested in this subject, because I had an accident back in 1969 as a worker at Walgreen warehouse in Houston. A heavy box fell on my left leg, at the calf, and broken the skin and it never healed. Thas was despite all kinds of medical . treatment and antibiotics, it simply would not heal. When I discovered I had diabetes in 2004 and started taking diabetic medicine, only then did it heal. Just imagine, I had this problem for over a period of 34 years. I did not have diabetes at the time in 1969, but my guess is that just a little elevated glucose could affect your blood circulation.

Warnings

Poor blood circulation can result in sores and cuts that do not heal properly. They may become infected. Ulcers can develop on the feet and toes and healing becomes difficult because the tissue does not receive oxygen and other nutrients. This is very evident in the elderly. Here is a personal word of advice: Examine your elderly parents lower legs and feet at least once a week, if not more often. This is especially true if they are diabetic. Check for signs of discoloration, bruises, sores or cuts. Do a thorough examination of the feet and toes. Often the elderly will not feel any changes in there bodies or suspect anything, They may be unaware they are having problems. And often times they are unable to do a self examination. This is where you or a medical personnel comes in. Again, if left unattended these sores can eventually lead to gangrene as mentioned above.

The Medical Breakthrough

However, there is now hope on the horizon for this deadly and debilitating disease. Current treatments only include rehabilitative exercises and inserting invasive surgical bypass blood vessels. Scientist at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have discovered a genetic switch that can increase the number of blood vessels in the skeletal muscle of mice. Thus increased blood flow is restored without exercise or surgery.

There are two types of skeletal muscle fibers. Slow twitching fibers that has a dense supply of blood vessels and fast twitching ones that has fewer blood vessels. The researchers use a estrogen related receptor that when activated in mice, convert fast fibers into slow twitching fibers. Lead PH.D. researcher Vihang Narkar At The University of Texas Medical School, said, ” This resulted in a striking increase in muscle blood supply as measured by imaging and angiography”.

This research will not only lead to a cure for critical limb ischemia, but holds out hope for other conditions linked to defective or poor blood flow supply. This is good news for heart disease patients and others whose conditions are caused by a blood flow related problem. These findings were published in the Medical Journal Cell Metabolism

Nothing can quite capture the imagination as an esquisite collection of fine and carefully chosen diamonds and gemstones. They not only add credence to your collection, but over all their presence and sheer beauty can easily surpass and overshadow everything else in an entire collection. Let us start with the obvious, the most precious of all stones, the diamond. It is one of the hardest known substance known to man. It is the most sought after and prized gem to grace anyone’s jewelry box or collection. But, how do you start a diamond collection? The first thing to do is acquaint yourself with the basic, yet very important criteria for choosing a fine diamond. They are commonly called the four C’s. However these four C;s are not common at all. They stand for the most important features a good diamond must exhibit, They are what make diamonds so desirable. The four C’s are, the Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat,

When rating the color of a diamond, jewellers commonly use the letters D through Z. The D represents a diamond that is colorless, to the rating Z that has a yellow or brownish hue. As a rule, the closer a diamond is to colorless, the more valuable and beautiful it is. Note: that this only applies to clear diamonds. Also often sought after and very rare, are the fancy colored diamonds. These well-defined colored stones include the pink, canary yellow, blue and green diamonds. These colored diamonds are very expensive. They are also extremely rare and make a major contribution to any serious collector’s showpiece. Also there are black diamonds.

The cut refers to how many well-proportioned facets are in the stone. A well-cut diamond, regardless of its shape, sparkles and offers the greatest brilliance. If a stone is cut poorly, it will appear dull and lifeless. It is less valuable because it lacks the sparkle, brilliance and therefore, beauty. Some cutters will sacrifice cut to create the largest possible diamond. Beauty over substance is therefore imperative. The different quality of cuts are graded as, Ideal, premium, very good, good, fair and poor. Generally you should seek an Ideal to very good diamond.

Clarity is an indication of a diamond’s purity. Diamonds frequently have inclusions, or small flaws, air bubbles, scratches, or other mineral deposits inside the diamond. The less inclusions a diamond has, the more valuable and beautiful it is.

Carats refer to the size of the diamond. Each carat has one hundred points. The carat weight refers to the mass of a diamond To be a prized diamond, it must be in relative proportion to its height, depth and girth. It must be asymmetrically and aesthetically pleasing. Normally the higher the carat the more expensive the diamond. However a two-carat diamond that is poorly cut is not nearly as beautiful as a smaller diamond cut by a skilled diamond cutter. Again beauty over a lot of substance.

So select well when choosing your diamond. Educate yourself on gemstones, but diamonds in particular. Buy certified diamonds if possible. Why, will be explained later.

Why certified diamonds?

There are good reasons why you want to purchase certified diamonds. A certified diamond leaves a paper trail. That means that your personal diamond has paperwork that is invaluable in the case of loss or theft. A thief cannot easily dispose certified diamonds because of their paper trail. There are no questionable or long drawn out insurance issues to contend with.. Also the diamond is examined and graded by experts insuring its integrity and quality. And finally, you are assured your diamond is genuine, not a man-made imitation.

The Gemologist Institute of America or GIA, is the industry leader in the field of gemology. The GIA was founded in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley, a jeweler from Wichita, Kansas. He realized that in America there was a lack of standardization in grading diamonds, .To that end, GIA created the International Diamond Grading Scale which is used throughout the world to grade, classify and identify diamonds. It is ideal to purchase diamonds bearing its certification. The paperwork includes all of the grading information as well as a complete pictorial diagram of the diamond in various settings. The diamond is also assigned a report number. The report number may also be inscribed on the diamond itself. A certified diamond is more valuable and holds it value.

Choosing your loose diamonds wisely

When choosing diamonds for investment or collecting, it is wise to deal in loose certified diamonds. The loose diamond is not partially hidden in a setting. All of it facets are visible. Any irregularities or chipped portions can be easily detected before purchasing. Also it is good to include several shapes of diamonds as part of your collection. Slowly build and add to your collection. The number one shape is the beautiful round diamond. This is usually the first diamond of choice. This is followed by the oval, marquise, emerald, princess and pear shaped diamonds.

When you are examaning diamonds, do not look at them only in the light setting in the jewelry store, because that light is purposely enhanced to bring out the diamond’s best features. Use sunlight and normal room light to examine your stones. You will be able to see what your diamond looks like in the real world setting. When choosing your diamonds ask the clerk to put out several of the same size and shaped diamonds for you to examine at once. Look at them closely and individually. If a certain one catches your eye. If it jumps out and shouts, “look at me” ! With every other thing being equal, that one diamond may be for you.

As noted above in the very first paragraph, I am placing emphasis on a diamond collection as oppose to a single gemstone. The subject is not about flipping diamonds, or buying to resell at a later date. Rather, it is about carefully selecting and putting togather a collection that is acquired over time. A diamond that is part of a collection is generally worth more than its stand-alone counterpart of the same size and quality. One tend to make a collection a part of a heirloom. Something that may be passed down from generation to generation. The emphasis is on buying diamonds that are truly diamonds, not a bagful of pretty glass. Your paperwork describes what you truly have. That is guaranteeing you an almost risk-free investment. Truly there are also downsizes to diamond collecting as it is with anything. The price of diamonds can go down, as with anything else as well. Also diamonds are not a liquid asset. It takes time and planning to sell and get the greatest return on your investment.

For your own protection do not rely on your certified paperwork alone. Do your own outside appraisal. Invest in what you love, because when all is said and done, it is you who must live with your decision and collection. And remember, always love the item first, not the investment potential. Nothing is written in stone. Do your homework. However you are quite safe with certified diamond purchases, because of their generous return merchandise policies. Some also have a later date buy back protection plan as well. Have your gem collection periodically reappraised because of the sharp rising value of all genstones. Your collection could now be worth much more than indicated by your old appraisal statement. Doing all of the above and staying alert to the issues, will insure you a risk free, worry free investment.

The need for alternative energy

With the sharp and continuous rise in the cost for a gallon of gasoline in recent years, it is quite evident that we are in the middle of a serious energy crisis. We have also recently had one of the most horrible and deadliest accident at BP. The explosion and oil spill brought about devastaring results that haunt us till now. All of this indicates that if there are any more problems on the horizon could be hurting even more as our fragile economic system struggles to survive. We must seriously therefore, rethink our approach to our extraction and our use of energy. We need to create and search for new energy solutions. Adding to those mounting problems are our strained relationship with our foriegn suppliers of oil. We depend very heavily on middle eastern oil. We are at their mercy. In order to receive their precious cargo, We are obliged to play their game, according to their rules. Added to this are the domestic issues and other mounting problems. For example, we have so many drilling restrictions place against the oil companies untill they are forced into doing nothing.Their hands are tied. In most cases these restrictions or laws tell them where and in most cases where not to drill for oil. Along this same line of thought, there are the conservationist and the EPA’s Clean Air Act Regulators restricting their need to even find more oil. This further diminishes any options for oil drilling. And at times I feel their reasoning might be justified and many, many times not justified.

Energy sources past

In the past, before there was the use of oil industrially, our energy resources were not fraught with such complicated perils as energy shortages, skyrocketing prices and polution. Our means of transportation was very limited, very modest, but clean and natural. We had two choices. One choice would be to walk or the other to ride a horse when traveling on land. That also would include the buggy or carriage when appropiate. On the river, seas or oceans, the choices were also two, To row the boat or to be propelled by wind powered sailboats or ocean going sailships. Energy was simple and clean back then. Of course inside the home for lighting and other practical uses, there were candles, made of bees. wax, and various oils for rudimentary utilizations. Wood stoves were the norm and they would supply the heat for cooking and the heat for confort on cold wintery nights. But modern day oil , as we know it, there was none.

Advent of the industrial revolution

Wat was the industrial revolution? What impact did it have on the lives and the standard of living back then? The Industrial Revolution was a period from the 18th to the 19th century where major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had a profound effect on the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the times. The industrial revolution began in the United Kingdom, then subsequently spread throughout Europe, North America, and eventually throughout the world. Nobel Prize winner Robert E. Lucas, Jr., said this of that time period, “For the first time in history,” he surmised, ” the living standards of the masses of ordinary people have begun to undergo sustained growth. … Nothing remotely like this economic behavior has happened before.” With this great shift away from farming and agriculture, new tools and machinery were forthcoming. A Scottish instrument maker, James Watt In 1765 perfected the steam engine. And that is when the industrial revolution began. It brought about new modes of transportation, such as the steam locomotive and steamships. And there were other applications for this new device, such as an electric generator to deliver electricity. Coal was the principal fuel used to heat the water to make steam to turn the turbines. It was a little after its infancy, when the industrial revolution began what we know today as an increasing fuel supply to meet the energy demands. That is when it began. And yet, there was no oil as we know it today..

Spindletop

The invention of the kerosene lamp in the mid 1850′s led to the establishment of the first U.S. oil company, the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company. However, the first major oil company was the Standard Oil Company founded by John D. Rockefeller in 1870. Standard Oil built its first oil refinery in Pennsylvania, then later expanded its extensive operations nationwide. After a decade of fierce competition, Standard Oil became the industry’s most dominant company controlling 80 percent of the distribution of all principal oil products, in particular kerosene. The method for drilling for oil back then was very crude, slow and laborous. But all of that was about to change. Anthony Lucas, an Austrian-born mining engineer, has been supervising the drilling of an oilwell since October 27, 1900 in south Beaumont, Texas. The oil field was known as Spindletop. They had no success after many attempts to drill for oil usig the standard methods of that time. Finally Lucas and his crew installed a new type drilling bit on the string of a drill pipe. The date was January 10, 1901. The drilling crew begins lowering the new bit to the bottom of the hole. They run about 700 feet of drill pipe into the 1,000-foot hole. Suddenly, the well starts spewing drilling mud, and finally crude oil began gushing out. That well began delivering over 100,000 barrels of oil per day. It showed that buried layers of rock could contain tremendous amounts of oil. What is more, it proved that rotary drilling what had finallyturned to, was an effective way to obtain it. Spindletop marked the beginning of the modern petroleum industry. This is the same class of drill bits used to day. So what happened at that time and place, as they say, ‘and the rest is history’.

An alternative clean resource available now

The idea to even write this topic came to me as as I was thinking, how is it that you could just place two dissemilar metals in a chemical solution, attach copper wires to each pole or rod and there would be a chemical reaction when the attached copper wires on the rods are joined together at each end causing an electric current to flow through those closed wires. If that is case I thought objectively, why not use the biggest chemical bowl at our disposal and see what happens? Why not use the earth itself to see if it could become a big chemical bowl? To my surprise this had already been done with a great degree of success. The telegraph companies have used DC current batteries to send messages over telegragh wires, but found that even when the batteries became depleted there was still current flowing in the wires. These telegraph wires were utilizing the earth’s battery source. So the telegraph companies adopted this system and began carrying electricity up to four hundred or more miles away using only the earth as a means of energy.

The earth battery

What exactly is an earth battery? Wikipedia defines the term as, ‘An Earth battery is a pair of electrodes made of two dissimilar metals, such as iron and copper, which are buried in the soil or immersed in the sea. Earth batteries act (the same) as water activated batteries and if the plates are sufficiently far apart, they can tap into telluric currents. Earth batteries are sometimes referred to as Telluric power sources and Telluric generators’. Thus, one is able to tap into earths’ underground magnetic field, tapping into an unlimited reservoir of power. There are many patents on earth batteries registered with the US Pantent Office. Yes earth batteries work! One of the notable inventors of the earth battery was Nathan Stubblefield. He received a U.S. Patent no. 600457 In 1898. He exclamed about his new invention, ” I have solved the problem of telephoning without wires through the earth as Signor Marconi has of sending signals through space.” And he continued, “The past is nothing. I have perfected now the greatest invention the world has ever known. I have taken light from the air and the earth, as i did sound” Alas the invention like many other good inventions fell out of public favor. But why? This type of invention could easily fall out of favor in the late nineteeth century with the advent of newly discovered cheap fuel such as oil. Oil back then was pennies on a dollar. Now however, with rising gas prices, it is time to focus again on alternative and reliable energy resources. What do you think about this tried and true energy source, the earth battery? It is a relative cheap energy source. It does not have the drawbacks of solar or wind powered projects. Nor does it have the prohibitive cost of either of those. There seems to be ongoing interest and research in this field of science. I think it is worth the ongoing research. What do you think?

Roman Meal Bread wholesome and nutritious

Roman Meal Bread is one of the most nutritious multi grain breads that I have ever tasted. I am writing this article because of the many health benefits I have personally recieved from eating whole grain products and especially when I include Roman Meal bread in my daily diet. The bread company has a long and eventful historical record spanning almost over ninety years. The company was founded in 1912 when Dr. Robert Jackson reversed his failing health through diet and exercise. He based his diet on the Roman soldier’s daily menu of whole wheat and whole rye bread. Dr. Jackson also added bran and flax seeds to his recipe. His diet also included fruits, nuts and other natural food products. Armed with his newfound diet and exercise plan, his health began to quickly improve remarkably. In 1927 he sold the business to William Matthaei, whose family ties in the baking business goes back way beyond the 1680s in Germany. However it was William Matthaei who was directly responsible for converting the Roman Meal formula into a nutritious and flavorful bread. The public loved his bread. Knowing that his bread was so successful, he envisioned great potentials for his Roman Meal Bread venture. Two years later he sold his bakery and other interests and devoted all of his attention to the Roman Meal Bread Company.

My introduction to Roman Meal Bread

I have eaten Roman Meal Bread since 1976 when my then, fiance’s mother offered me a grill cheese sandwich. Up to that time I had only eaten white bread. Nor did I like the taste of regular brands of wheat bread. When I first tasted that grilled cheese sandwich, it was like no bread I had ever tasted before. It was delicious. I of course exclamed excitedly to my future mother-in-law, ‘What kind of bread is this bread? I must have this bread! Where did you buy it’? It was her introducing me to Roman Meal that has made all the difference in my life. I have been on a life long journey with the Roman Meal Bread company. No I do not work for the company, I only eat their bread.

Health benefits

I have had some medical problems, of course. Diabetes ran rampant in my mother;s family. Her mother and all of her siblings had type I diabetes. I got diagnosed with type II diabetes in 2004. At the same time my doctor informed me that I had prostate cancer also. These were some of the things I inherited from both parents. From my mother I inherited the diabetes and from my father the prostate cancer. I had gained a lot of weight prior to that time, and generally did not watch my red meat and other starches intake This is a sure way to become diabetic. The doctor was amazed however, that my cholesterol, heart and other vital organs were better than excellent. As I had mentioned elsewhere before, I have no cholesterol, or other clogged artery problems. I am arthritis free. I feel that eating Roman Meal Bread for all of these years has a lot to do with my being otherwise healthy. I am hooked on Roman Meal. I do not eat any other kind of bread as a rule. Of course I eat my occasional cornbread with certain meals, and I am in excellent health otherwise. As long as I keep my weight in check I do not have to take my diabetic medication. I do monitor my sugar regularly. I attribute much of this to eating Roman Meal Bread. I do not have any special diet. I eat Roman Meal regularly with my meals. By the way, how does Roman Meal Bread taste? I could tell you just how wonderful it taste, but I want you to find that out for yourself. Thanks Roman Meal.

All natural 12 grain bread

Using green energy

In my previous discussion. I mentioned several reasons whey we should search for alternative energy. For example, we have difficulty right now trying to meet the energy needs of our growing population. The growth rate in America and the rest of the world is threatening to triple our demand for energy consumption by the year 2050. This is a grave problem. But the problem is not a domestic issue, It is global, Growing China has announced that it will be importing an enormous amount of raw materials and oil for its energy needs. This will only partly satisfy Chinas’ huge appetite to manufacture and then to export its goods. China is growing and expanding. rapidly becoming the dominant world leader in export and import. Hence, there is a worldwide shortage. Especially is there a shortage for oil. But China is not alone in demanding oil. There are the other emerging countries as well.

The earth battery to the rescue

These and other reasons are why we should investigate other energy alternatives. What should we look for? Preferably we should look at an energy source that is clean and renewable. It should not be a system that needs refueling or a need to discard as a waste material when the fuel is depleted. Thus contributing more polution. In my opinion, this is where the earth battery may come in to play. The earth battery is self-re-energizing. The battery is clean. There are no harmful chemical additives. There are no eyesore structures erected. The earth battery is not a blithe on the community, It is clean and just about everything srtucturally about the system is aestectic and underground. Only the power wires leading to the house might be above ground, but that also is optional. Of course as with any equipment or machinery, upkeep and maintenance is necessary.

How does it work

The next astonishing question you would probably ask yourself, is how something so simple could ever possibly work? Well you do not need to trust me on this one. It is a battery. And it works. A battery is a reservior of latent energy. It consist of chemicals and materials in stasis. It needs a catayist to work. To start the current flowing are the two dissimilar poles or rods underground with attached copper wires to open and close the circuit. It is that simple. The poles are copper (north+) and zinc ,tin or aluminum (south-). As I had mentioned in my previous artlcle, that earth batteries were used extensively around the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries to power telegraph lines. They were buried in convenient locations along the power lines and supplied free current for those lines up to four hundred miles or more. What made this free energy source fall out of favor was, cheap coal, oil and a new hydro-electric system. With these systems in vogue, the companies could measure the amount of energy used by the customer and charge them accordingly. Why give the customers something free, when you can make them pay for something else? There are several different installation methods to make the earth battery work. It works best where the soil is wet and acidic, Also there is the telluric currents, They occur naturally just below the surface of the ground. One could tap into this current or into the currents from the earths’ magnetic field. All of these approaches can produce an electric current.

Powering your home

In theory you could power your home with an earth battery. But as with anything there are drawbacks. Some errosion of the poles may occur over time meaning they may periodically need replacing. Arranging the setup for maximum current flow is important. There may be other issues along that line of thought. However there are inverters and other devices that can regulate and greatly increase current flow and wattage .As we race to invent the super battery, we should not leave the earth battery hanging in the dust.

And that is what blew my mind. In what seemed like an instant, Columbia had literally jumped from Australia clear to the coast of California. I had personally never seen anything like that before. The announcer followed this comment with, “you will now hear a sonic boom”, as Columbia now approaches Edwards Air Force Base. There was a dull faint thud heard as the telephoto len camaras zoomed in on a still far away spacecraft as the blur gradually came into focus. And then it landed, as it was escorted by its two sister chase fighters. I recalled how long a conventional commercial nonstop flight would take to come all the way from down under Australia, to the west coast. It would probably take about fifteen to twenty hours. Yet this amazing machine took what seemed like mere seconds!.

Faster than a speeding bullet?

Just how fast does the space shuttle travels orbiting the earth? Later I found out that the space shuttle is hurltling along at an astonishing speed of over 17,500 mph. One observer watching the night sky, said that as he watched the space shuttle, it took about ten minutes to go from one horizon to tne other. Actually that would seem very slow for a craft going 17,500 mph Taking into account what would seem very slow, is only due to the fact that the space shuttle is flying at a very high altitude of about 200 miles above Earth. At that great height, the perception is that it is going much slower than it actually is. When in orbit, a space shuttle circles earth above the equator at a speed of 17,500 mph. Each circuit around the earth takes about 90 minutes and the crew sees a sunrise or sunset about every 45 minutes. For comparison purposes, just how fast does a bullet travel in miles per hour? For example pistol bullets reach speeds of about 950 miles per hour. The average M-16 bullet travels about 6336 miles per hour (mph). That is still at a snail’s pace compared to the space shuttle. Yes the majestic space shuttle as mentioned, sustain speeds of 17,500 mph in orbit. This is amost 2.762% faster than the speed of the M-16 rifle. The question again, is the space shuttle faster than a speeding bullet? It is a resounding yes! The space shuttle when circling the globe is traveling much faster than a speeding bullet.

The Hubble telescope was launched in 1990,
by space shuttle Discovery. The launch date was April 24, 1990 at 8:33;51 am.

The International Space Station (ISS) is an internationally-developed research facility that was carried by the Russians and by the space shuttle in orbit. It is the largest Space Station ever constructed. In-orbit construction of the station began in 1998 and is expected to be finished in 2012. This of course will now be without any involvement from the space shuttle in the program. There were also three interplanetary crafts that were launched from the space shuttles: the Magellan spacecraft that traveled to Venus, the Galileo spacecraft that traveled to Jupiter, and the Ulysses spacecraft that traveled to the sun. The space shuttles also deployed important observatories into space, including as previously mentioned Hubble Space Telescope, the Gamma Ray Observatory, the Diffuse X-Ray Spectrometer, and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory

The shuttle has carried more than three million pounds of cargo and more than 600 crewmembers into space. Performed hundreds of scientific experiments while in orbit. Included are the missing tile replacement repair work the crew had to perform outside the shuttle while in orbit. The shuttles docked nine times with the Russian space station Mir. Undertook many flights to construct the International Space Station and traveled to the station many times including the last visit by Atlantis, July 2011.

The final closure

Yes the space shuttle program has come to an end with the final landing of Atlantis on July 21, 2011. The landing time: 5:57 a.m. EDT. Thus the many successes and achievements are now a part of history. So are the two horrific tragedies, They are a stark reminder to us of our own human frailties and of our own mortality. Lest we should forget that. Challenger as well as the maiden ship Columbia were a part of the ill-fated voyages. But, where do we go from here? What does the future hold for the space program?

The vehicle that is slated to replace the space shuttle is the Constellation Orion produced by Lockheed Martin. The Orion appears very similar to the Apollo spacecraft of the 1960s, although it is larger and much more advanced. Orion will hold a four man crew whose primary goal is research. If it goes to the moon, unlike previous lunar missions, all four crew members will leave the craft in orbit to travel to the surface of the moon. In the meantime we will hitch rides to the space station with the Russians.

September is prostate awareness month

Prostate cancer is second only to lung cancer as a killer of American men with cancer. And it is the second most common cancer among men in the United States. Only skin cancer affects more.In the past two decades, the number of American men diagnosed with prostate cancer has skyrocketed . There were an estimated 186,000 new cases last year. Meaning, more discoveries are made earlier. These early diagnosis are possible, thanks in part to a routine blood test that looks for a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA), as this has become a standard practice among doctors. Thus, more lives are spared due to early detection.

Dispite these findings however, there will still be about 27,000 prostate related deaths this years. Again, thanks to early screening, the deaths will be reduced from 31,000 annually before there were PSA screenings to the much lower amount mentioned above, 27,000 annually.

In the summer of 2000, I went for a physical and blood work unrelated to prostate screening. I discovered that my PSA levels were at 8 and needed watching. ’0 to 4 is considered in the normal range’, my doctor had told me. I had an ultra sound probe examination, and that confirmed that everything looked normal and that was that.

In 2004, I became chronically exhausted. I began to urinate frequently. Began to experience excruciating leg cramps. All kinds of symptoms including numbing of the extremities and severe weight loss.

After reluctantly going in for tests, it was discovered that I had diabetes and prostate cancer.

My diabetes were over 600, ( 98 – 120 ) is considered normal. My prostate PSA had risen to well over 20 counts. One friend’s count was at 10 and his was also diagnosed cancerous. In my case even at this time, I had none of the classic symptoms of prostate problems. Not enlarged, and there were none of the other problems associated with this type of cancer affecting other areas of my life. In all outward appearance, It looked normal. The tissue was healthy looking to the trained urologist eye. Only under close scrutiny of a biopsy, did the test results betray the appearance of normalcy. It was cancer. The symptoms that had forced me to seek out my doctor again? They were all caused by the onset of diabetes.

What are the causes of both of the illnesses? Since I have both. Usually it occurs from an improper diet and a sedentary lifestyle. It is also hereditary, as I later learned. My father had prostate cancer. I had known he was sick with something, but did not know it was prostate related. And my mother, died from juvenile diabetic complications. Mine is type II.

A healthy and active lifestyle goes a long way in delaying or preventing prostate cancer. It starts with a good diet. Replacing more meat with more fruits, vegetables and fish. Include more chicken than red meats. Regular exercising. Anything to get those vital signs up and moving again.

Regular checkups including colo-rectol screenings is also advised. This is a must for all men approaching their mid-life years. With a positive outlook on life, we can meet the challenges of aging. We can prevent or cure many of the things ailing us.Thankfully I caught my cancer in time. Later we will discuss low-grade prostate cancer.

Music as a positive influence

How can we get our young ones more interested in music? Of course they are interested in music! Just take a glance at the pop charts. The bill-board ratings are jumping off the wall, literally. And largely, thanks to them. In fact, a large portion of the credit goes to their keen interest in music. So the question is, how do we steer these young ones in a more positive direction? How can they maintain their affinity to their peers and their generation, yet reach out for more loftier aspirations? Such as appreciating good music. Not that the music of choice, their choosing of course, is in anyway harmful, or it could be. But the point is, that there is more in the world than our own little back yards. There is a very big world out there. We need to get them looking beyond their limited horizon.

What is the solution? For starters , it is the home and it’s environment. It is so simple, It starts in the home first. Oftentimes, the influential home-figure may or may not be the parent or relative. That mentor, might it be a teacher, or a big brother. Someone who can be influential and bridge the gap. Someone who who is able to make a real difference in their life. Someone that will be able to help the child cross over that bridge. Let me give you examples. Remember the kind policeman, officer Joe Martin, who befriended Ali, taught him how to box and literally helped made him into the GREATEST! Also, Micheal could have been a mediocre baseball player, or perhaps even a good one. After all he did play for a short period of time in the minor leagues, But there is only one Micheal Jordan and his destiny was in basketball. His father, when he was alive, attended all of his games.

And now what can we conclude from this? It is, that our children have enormous talents. Those talents are not always readily evident. To the disavantaged inner-city kids, our advice is, Your career need not be sports related to escape poverty and a hopeless future. Basketball or football, may not be the way out. Or perhaps it could be, If the drive, the skills and love for the sport is there, then go for it. But remember, Tiger’s father did not point him in the direction of the obvious choices, but instead to golf. Col. Parker picked up a fledgling Elvis and mentored him. Micheal Jackson’s father encouraged and managed the five of them. Beyonce’ father mentors and manages her. Micheal Jorden’s dad was his biggest fan. Nor dare we leave out two of the greatest tennis talents living today, Venus and Vanessa Williams. Their greatest fan? Of course, their dad the mentor. Be a good mentor. Some of those mentioned were not.

Who will become the next Yo Yo Ma, or the new Marion Anderson? Is there someone waiting anxiously in the wings ready to replace the late Isaac Stern,or become the next Izaac Perlman? Who knows? It just might be your little one in the bedroom practicing his violin lessons. Always remember this, never discourage or put down your child for wanting to do something different, something different from what we had planned for them. They may decide that they want to be an actor or muscian, instead of going to law school or choosing sports. Nor do we want to push or try to re-live our failed ambitions through them. Gently and deftly steer them. Anything else could scar them. Expose your kids to classical music. Expose them to all the good and positive things of life. Enjoy a movie, a concert, a video game or even an opera with them. Get them involved. And if you see even a hint of interest, aim them in that direction and set their sites and goals high. As mentioned above, It is a very big world. And from a high vantage point, they can see clearly how to make wise choices.
